Tips on choosing the right PPE for your spill kit

Previously we looked at the dangers of choosing a spill kit that includes Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), highlighting the importance of selecting your own PPE based on your specific requirements. Several factors need to be considered when choosing PPE for your spill kit, like the nature and extent of a spill, as well as each individual responder and their specific application. Here are three tips that will help you make the right choice:

1. Determine who your responders are

Spill responders will be all different shapes and sizes, and one size of protective suit or gloves will not fit everyone. Determine who your spill responders are and their specific measurements to ensure that the right size of PPE is selected. Measure responders to manufacturer guidelines and get them to try PPE on for size and comfort before purchasing PPE for your spill kit.

2. Identify the liquids used in your facility

It’s important to consider the types of liquids that are used throughout your facility so that compatible PPE can be chosen. Your specific liquids will have been identified in your risk assessment, but make sure you check the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) of your liquids with the PPE manufacturer. This will help to determine compatibility with your liquids and ensure safe spill clean up.

3. Determine the level of exposure and working environment

The type of working environment and the level of exposure will also affect your choice of PPE. Determine the volume and depth of spill that is likely to happen, and the splash and spray hazards that responders are exposed to. This will help you to determine the level of resistance and protection that PPE needs to have to ensure complete protection.

Around 9000 PPE-related accidents are reported each year Taking these tips into consideration before purchasing PPE will ensure responders are properly protected and will help to reduce the risk of an accident occurring.
